Brookings is located in the quaint mountain village of Cashiers, NC. We offer a full line of men's and women's gear for the outdoor sportsman or sportswoman - clothing, boots and shoes, fishing rods, reels and accessories, hunting and shooting supplies, plus all the supplies you need for your "best friend" - your dog. Brookings is owned and staffed by experienced fly fishermen, hunters, outfitters and guides.
We offer fly fishing schools and lessons, as well as guided day trips. Custom trips for the experienced fly fisher are available upon request. Our fishing trips take place primarily on the Davidson and Tuckasegee rivers - western North Carolina's best-known trout rivers, a fly fisherman's dream.
Nearby are ample opportunities for the hiker or hunter. We are located within minutes of the Pisgah National Forest, and within easy driving distance of the Great Smokies, Nantahala National Forest, the Appalachian Trail, and Mountains-to-Sea Trail.
Our guides can advise you on everything from where to get a fishing permit,current river levels and conditions, western NC hunting seasons, and all those 'secret spots' for fishing and hunting that only the experienced locals know about.

Novembers are mild in climate and can provide excellent fishing. In March, when we begin to see some insect activity, the rivers are empty with a few local fly fishers taking advantage of the beginning of an active entomological phenomenon. The Cashiers/Highlands area is visited mostly in the summer, and although you can catch fish, the more productive fall and spring seasons are overlooked. If you are a fly fisher, the rivers are silent, without footsteps, and provide the solitude that is so rewarding. We are a full line Orvis dealer. We carry Orvis fly fishing tackle, and shooting supplies as well as casual clothing for men and women. If we do not have it in the store, we can order it for you and you will save shipping charges! We also carry Woolrich and Columbia for men and women. However we are not just fishing, hunting, and casual apparel, we also have many home accessories that are unique and quaintly Appalachian.
Dogs
We love our dogs so we carry Orvis dog beds along with collars, leashes, toys, books, and accessories for our canine companions. When you come in the store, you will meet our friendly store dog. She is a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon and her name is Mags. Dogs are a big part of life for many hunters and fishermen, so we make sure we can supply anything you need for training, tracking, and rewarding your dog - whether tracker, pointer, or retriever. Our supplies will fit any size dog too!
Fishing
We carry a full line of Orvis trout rods. All rods have a 25 year unconditional guarantee. If you break your favorite rod, no problem! You can break it and we will get you a new one for free. From the Clearwater series to the new Trident TL's(Winners in the "Gray's Best" by Gray's Sporting Journal), we have the right rod at the right price for all Appalachian fishing excursions.
Along with the rods, we carry all the Orvis tackle you need to get on the stream and keep you on the stream. From boots to waders to tippet, you will find it here. Our fly selection is one of the largest in the area. Our locally tied flies are tied for our rivers. Trout can be picky, and tastes change from stream to stream. Come in and ask "What are they hitting on?" and we will recommend the latest and luckiest flies. Our guides are on the rivers everyday and they keep us up to date on a daily basis.
Hunting
Orvis has a long tradition in the shooting sports and Brookings carries on that tradition. We carry fine double guns, over/unders, and semi-automatics. Brookings has many friends and clients that share our passion. Because of them we are able to offer highly collectible and hard to find consignment guns. Our inventory turns over rapidly and you can usually find Parkers and LC Smiths from a better vintaged time. Call us to inquire what we have or what we can find for you.
In addition to our shotgun collection, you will find shooting clothing from Orvis, Filson, Browning, and others. We also carry Galco shooting accessories and a classic assortment of vests, gun cases, accessories, and neccessities from other manufacturers.
